HUALIEN (TVBS News) — The Central Cross-Island Highway, damaged by the Hualien earthquake, is set to reopen to heavy trucks weighing less than 17 tons at the 19.7-kilometer mark on Monday (April 15).

The highway had been closed to heavy trucks after the earthquake due to damage to the road base, with the Guguan section of the Highway Bureau working tirelessly to clear the route over the past few days.

Chang Yu-min, the head of the Guguan section of the Highway Bureau, said a day earlier that after stacking block stones and conducting compression and load-bearing vehicle tests, the road will reopen to heavy trucks weighing less than 17 tons on Monday.

Chang pointed out that the damaged section of the road had only been initially repaired. To ensure road safety, control stations will inspect heavy trucks.

The Guguan section has already begun planning reinforcement construction, urging to avoid overloading vehicles to prevent further damage to the road base.
