Hualien County hardest hit by Taiwan’s significant quake

HUALIEN (TVBS News) — A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan early Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and leaving nine dead as of 6 p.m. The seismic event triggered landslides, building collapses, and road damage, stranding 77 people, including foreigners, in the mountainous areas.

The Central Emergency Operation Center reports that 28 buildings collapsed across Taiwan, with 17 in Hualien County. Collapses also occurred in Yilan County, Keelung City, and New Taipei City, illustrating the quake's extensive impact.

Transport Minister Wang Kwo-tsai highlighted the critical damage to infrastructure, including the Taipei MRT’s Circular Line, Suhua Highway, and several Hualien tunnels. This damage has significantly isolated the eastern part of Taiwan, necessitating a shift to sea transport for an indeterminate period.

The most significant quake in 25 years has hit Hualien hardest. With the four-day holiday period underway, officials urge vigilance and preparedness for aftershocks.
