Taiwan commits to safety overhaul on Taroko anniversary (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Secretary-General of the Presidential Office Lin Chia-lung said Monday (April 1) night on Facebook that he has not "forgotten the day" as the third anniversary of the Taroko train derailment accident approaches.

Lin revealed that he received a letter from a representative of the families affected by the Taroko train accident earlier in the day, and the letter emphasized that while the corporatization of Taiwan Railways has been achieved, the journey towards safety reform must not stop.

Tomorrow marks the third anniversary of the Taroko 408 train accident. Due to scheduling conflicts, Lin will not be able to attend the "Taroko Accident Third Anniversary Memorial Meeting" in person.

Lin stated that in January, he accompanied President Tsai Ing-wen to witness the official listing of Taiwan Railways, a significant step in its reform. The government has been pushing for accelerated progress in the reform process, with the involvement and efforts of the families of the victims of the Taroko train accident, hoping that Taiwan Railways can implement the highest quality of safety control.

Lin said that it took 20 years to finally complete the path of reform, adding that the corporatization of Taiwan Railways is just the beginning.

He expressed hopes of breaking the old and rigid public service system, establishing a new business operation model and culture, introducing professional talents and technology in the rail transport industry, and enhancing the safety of Taiwan Railways.

He stated that they will continue to strive to make Taiwan Railways better and prevent accidents from happening again.
