Ko Wen-je supports Ma Ying-jeou‘s China trip with conditions (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People's Party (TPP) Chairman Ko Wen-je said Tuesday (March 26) he does not oppose former President Ma Ying-jeou's upcoming visit to China, as long as it is conducted under the principle of mutual respect and dignity. "Some things still need to be done," Ko said.
Ma is set to lead a delegation of Taiwanese youth to China on April 1. His trip has sparked speculation about whether he will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, a meeting that would be their first in nearly nine years.
Ko, however, has no plans to visit China himself, saying that such a trip must have a purpose.
Hsiao Hsu-tsen, executive director of the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation, also commented on the possibility of a second "Ma-Xi meeting," following their historic summit in Singapore in 2015. "We hope to meet with old friends again, but we respect the arrangements of the mainland," Hsiao said.
