TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen expressed hope on Tuesday (March 26) that former President Ma Ying-jeou would bear in mind the people's expectations for sovereignty, democracy, and rule of law during his visit to China.
The news of Ma's visit to China from April 1 to 11 was announced the previous day. Ma's itinerary includes Guangdong Province, Shaanxi, and Beijing, where he will visit historical and cultural sites as well as businesses. Ma will also lead a group of young students to visit Sun Yat-sen University and Peking University for cross-strait student exchanges.
Premier Chen stated that he respects Ma's personal itinerary and will provide necessary security assistance. He emphasized the importance of Ma remembering the values of the Taiwanese people during his visit.
The former president's visit to China comes at a time of heightened tension between the two nations, and his actions will be closely watched by both sides. Chen's comments reflect the government's cautious approach to the visit, underscoring the delicate balance of maintaining cross-strait relations while upholding Taiwan's democratic values.
