TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Caucus Whip Wu Szu-yao on Monday (March 25) urged former President Ma Ying-jeou to assert Taiwan's sovereignty during his upcoming visit to China.

Wu criticized the Kuomintang (KMT) for scheduling a visit to China during a sensitive period before President-elect Lai Ching-te takes office, arguing it goes against mainstream public opinion in Taiwan.

Ma, a KMT member, is set to visit China again on April 1, and will make his first visit to Beijing.

Wu pointed out that high-ranking KMT members, including Vice Chairman Andrew Hsia, have frequently visited China, warning the KMT to be cautious in their words and actions during visits to China to avoid sending the wrong message and contravening Taiwan's mainstream public opinion.

She expressed disbelief at the KMT's tendency to schedule visits to China at critical moments.

The caucus whip also brought up the issue of Taiping Island, following Ma's Facebook post on whether President Tsai Ing-wen should visit the island.

Wu believes the KMT should assert the Republic of China's (Taiwan) sovereignty over Taiping Island and reiterated her call for Ma to assert Taiwan's sovereignty during his visit to China.
