Taipower debunks myths about skyrocketing electricity bills (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) clarified on Sunday (March 24), that the use of specific appliances by households would not lead to a monthly electricity bill increase of NT$10,000.
High-power appliances like ovens consume more electricity, but unlike bakeries and other businesses, typical households do not operate multiple appliances or use them continuously for seven to eight hours.
Taipower stated that businesses could choose time-of-use electricity rates based on their actual consumption. They could also apply for government subsidies for energy-saving equipment or receive energy-saving guidance from Taipower.
High-power appliances generally refer to those that generate heat, such as ovens, electric cookers, and electric kettles, and the actual power consumption of these appliances is related to their usage duration, Taipower added.
Consumers can evaluate their electricity usage patterns and choose time-of-use billing to save on electricity costs. Peak and off-peak times are billed separately at a single rate, unaffected by progressive rates.
Since last year, the government has been promoting "energy-saving equipment subsidies for businesses and the service industry."
This year, it expanded the subsidy items to encourage businesses to replace old energy-consuming equipment. Taipower also provides energy-saving guidance services for small and medium-sized industrial users' main energy-consuming equipment, such as lighting, air conditioning, and air compressors.
Taipower clarified that residential electricity is billed progressively, with each tier having a fixed price.
Only the electricity consumption exceeding the tier is charged at a higher rate. With the recent electricity price adjustment, residential usage above 1,000 degrees increased by 10%, but only 2% of households nationwide exceed 1,000 degrees per month, and only these 2% will be affected by the 10% increase.
