Taiwan faces temperature swings and unhealthy air quality (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Friday (March 15) continues to see the effects of the Huanan Cloud System, causing mostly cloudy or overcast weather in Taiwan, according to predictions by Facebook weather page, WeatherRisk.

Showers are possible in northern areas but are not expected to significantly disrupt outdoor activities, WeatherRisk added.

Temperatures in central, northern, and eastern Taiwan are forecasted to be between 22-25 degrees Celsius during the day, while southern regions could see slightly warmer temperatures, from 25-27 degrees or above.

However, temperatures may plunge below 15 degrees overnight in open regions of the north and northeast, with a significant difference between day and night temperatures.

Thanks to the effects of the easterly winds, the western half of Taiwan witnessed light winds and fog, leading to poorer air quality in the early morning.

In some places, air quality reached unhealthy levels for sensitive groups, colored orange on the Air Quality Index. Regions south of Chiayi saw the red alert, indicating unhealthy air for all groups.

This weekend, between March 16 and March 17, the influence of the Huanan Cloud System is expected to diminish as it moves northward with strengthening southerly winds.

Daytime temperatures across Taiwan will further increase, with lows of 15-17 degrees in the north and northeast and 17-19 degrees in the south and the Hualien-Taitung areas.

A cold front is expected to approach northern Taiwan late Sunday night to early Monday (March 18), bringing cooler air down from the northeast. Consequently, cooler temperatures are expected from Tuesday (March 19) to Thursday (March 21) morning, with the potential for lows reaching around 10 degrees in open regions.
