TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Celebrating March 8 International Women's Day, President Tsai Ing-wen highlighted Taiwan's achievements in gender equality over the past eight years, leading in three areas in Asia.
President Tsai referenced Taiwan as the first Asian country to endorse marriage equality. She also pointed out that Taiwan has the highest ratio of female legislators in the Legislative Yuan among Asian nations.
Furthermore, according to a 2023 report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Taiwan's performance on gender equality ranks first in Asia.
In a Facebook post, President Tsai stressed the continuous mission to promote gender equality, expressing hope for all women to live freely and safely in Taiwan.
President Tsai said that, in recent years, the government has been promoting gender-friendly workplaces.
She emphasized that the government encouraged men to share domestic and childcare responsibilities, enhanced women's employment skills, assisted women in setting up businesses, improved long-term care systems, and reduced the burdens women encountered at work and in daily life.
Today, the government formally implemented a reform plan for the gender equality mechanism proposed in 2023. With the efforts of both ruling and opposition legislators, amendments to relevant acts were completed, she noted.
These acts include the Gender Equity Education Act, the Act of Gender Equality in Employment, and the Sexual Harassment Prevention Act.
