TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen said Tuesday (March 5) that implementing a unified Labor Day holiday can be considered, however, the proposal requires significant adjustment.

Responding to a question posed by Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Lin I-chin, Chen pointed out that the nation's designated holidays have already reached their limit. However, the feasibility of a unified day off, where all would enjoy a rest on May 1, Labor Day, is under contemplation.

Lin raised concerns about the proposal's biggest challenge: the added cost of overtime pay for police and firefighters who work on public holidays. She voiced hopes that the Executive Yuan would consider this aspect in the decision-making process.

Minister of the Interior Lin Yu-chang, the official overseeing holidays, emphasized that a consensus would be needed for a uniform Labor Day holiday and plans for implementing the change.

Directorate-General of Personnel Administration Personnel Division Director-General Su Chun-jung said an internal review of the Labor Day holiday idea has already been conducted, but an impact assessment of such a decision is still needed.
