BEIJING (TVBS News) — China's 14th National People's Congress convened Tuesday (March 5) in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where Premier Li Qiang of the State Council of China delivered his first government work report since taking office, outlining economic growth goals, international diplomacy, and policies toward Taiwan.
Li stressed the "One China" principle and "1992 Consensus," firmly opposing "Taiwan independence" and foreign interference, and promoting the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.
The premier's report highlighted that China's military and national defense construction have achieved new results and progress over the past year, with the People's Liberation Army completing its tasks.
In a break from more than 30 years of tradition, there will be no press conference with the premier after the end of the National People's Congress this year.
Li's report emphasized adherence to the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong," and "Macau people ruling Macau," implementing the principles of "patriots ruling Hong Kong" and "patriots ruling Macau".
The Chinese government, according to the report, plans to provide more employment opportunities to boost income growth this year, as it expects more than 11.7 million university graduates.
Major anticipated development targets for this year also include approximately 5% GDP growth; more than 12 million new urban jobs, an urban survey unemployment rate of about 5.5%; and a residential consumer price increase of about 3%.
Last year, China's economy made some recovery, according to China’s reports, with GDP exceeding 126 trillion yuan, a 5.2% increase.
Urban jobs rose by 12.44 million, and the urban survey unemployment rate averaged 5.2%. The GDP growth target for this year may reach last year's of "around 5%" or fall below 5%, the report noted.
