NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A group leading the efforts to recall New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih announced on Tuesday (Feb. 20) that it has collected over 20,000 signatures, reaching half of the required 40,000.
In a social media post, the group said that citizens have been showing keen interest in the status of the recall petition, which has already collected 21,262 signatures.
The group will continue to collect signatures at a drive from 3 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 at the Taipei Metro's Haishan Station.
The organizers said some people still feel dissatisfaction with Hou's decision to run for president, however, many are unaware of the ongoing recall effort, hence the group's need to publicize the campaign via air and ground operations.
According to a volunteer of the organizer, Ms. Chen, the ability to collect signatures has been limited by manpower, with the recall drive being able to host events only once a week.
Under the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, recalling an elected official is a two-phase process that first involves collecting signatures from voters. If successful, a public vote is then held to determine the result of the recall.
