TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese baseball star Yu Chang has landed a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays as well as an invitation to Major League spring training.
The news was reported by Marc Topkin from the Tampa Bay Times and confirmed by Chang's American agency, ACES. Chang is renowned for his superior defense while playing for the Boston Red Sox, drawing interest from over ten teams during the offseason.
After careful consideration and on the recommendation of Rays Head Coach Kevin Cash, Chang chose to continue his American career with a monthly salary of US$36,000 (about NT$1.13 million).
The terms of Chang's contract also include an invitation to Major League spring training and a clause outlining his potential bonuses, which would be twice as much as the previous year. If Chang gets promoted to the major leagues, his annual salary will hit US$1 million (roughly NT$31 million).
Chang was attracted to the Rays, appreciating the team's excellent atmosphere. He also confirmed his decision via Instagram.
