TAINAN (TVBS News) — Tainan City reported its first imported case of dengue fever this year on Tuesday (Feb. 20). The individual had returned from a family trip to Indonesia, showing symptoms of fever upon reentry on Feb. 18.

Despite initially testing negative during a rapid NS1 screening, the person subsequently tested positive in a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay. This confirmed the diagnosis of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease commonly found in tropical climates.

In response, the Tainan City Public Health Bureau has sprung into preventive action. The bureau stated in a press release that it has initiated related prevention efforts including chemical prevention and control at the patient’s residence.

Residents have been educated about the disease and its transmission, and notices regarding the situation have been posted.

According to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control, dengue fever is frequently reported in Southeast Asian countries. The Tainan City Public Health Bureau urges travelers to these areas to take preventive measures against mosquitoes.

People exhibiting symptoms upon their return should seek medical attention promptly. The symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, and rash similar to measles.
