Hou Yu-ih calls for peace after fatal speedboat chase (TVBS News)
NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Following the tragic incident of a Chinese speedboat capsizing, leading to the death of two aboard after being chased away by Taiwan, New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih on Friday (Feb. 16) called for appropriate resolution of issues between the two sides.
Hou acknowledged the strenuous work of the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) during its mission and expressed regret over the incident.
The Chinese speedboat trespassed into Kinmen waters two days ago (Feb. 14), persistently evading the CGA. Despite attempts at interception, the boat ultimately capsized, resulting in two fatalities.
The incident provoked condemnation from China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), blaming Taiwan for the mishap.
Hou emphasized the importance of properly addressing such minor incidents that might ignite larger disputes and conflicts.
Hou suggested that both sides treat each other equitably and proactively confront issues that could potentially catalyze confrontations. He stressed thoughtful consideration of the challenges that the future might present, and the search for appropriate solutions. This, he believes, is the pragmatic approach to avoiding any future disputes and conflicts.
