Taiwan faces potential shift in legislative power dynamics

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In response to the Kuomintang's (KMT) hopes to expand its personnel power, Premier Chen Chien-jen emphasized the importance of abiding by constitutional regulations on Wednesday (Feb. 7).

KMT legislator Weng Hsiao-ling asserted that personnel approval should rest with the Legislative Yuan. Future unqualified leaders should be dismissed by parliament, Weng suggested. The KMT also proposes the establishment of a Special Investigation Division within Parliament.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators responded to the KMT's initiative, arguing that constitutional amendments need to be carried out first.

"Taiwan is a country where the constitution, democracy, and rule of law prevail," Premier Chen said. "For the executive and legislative branches, the constitution has numerous regulations. I believe every agency should follow the guidelines of the constitution and related principles in all their tasks."

Regarding the personnel power issues, the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) expressed its willingness to cooperate with other parties to complete the effort of reforming the parliament. These advances could mark a significant shift in Taiwan's legal landscape and the power dynamics of its political system.
