Taiwan braces for chilly weather as cold front moves in (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will experience a cold and damp shift starting Wednesday (Feb. 7) as a mainland cold front gradually moves southward. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reports that morning temperatures nationwide will range between 15 and 17 degrees Celsius.

The CWA forecasts that daytime temperatures in the north and Yilan and Hualien regions will reach only 17 to 20 degrees. In contrast, the central, southern sectors and Taitung can expect warmer temperatures of 23 to 27 degrees Celsius. Overnight, temperatures will significantly drop, especially in central and southern regions where there will be a large gap between day and night temperatures.

The likelihood of rainfall increases in central and southern areas beginning Wednesday night, with rain anticipated across Taiwan. Broad, persistent rainfall is expected in northern regions and Yilan, while other areas may see localized, brief showers. Residents are advised to carry rain gear when venturing outdoors.

On Lunar New Year's Eve, which falls on Thursday, rainfall will continue with chances of heavy rain in mountainous regions. While scattered showers are anticipated for Saturday evening, a cold and damp trend will persist across Taiwan.

Meteorologist Peng Chi-ming noted the possibility of snow or sleet in high-altitude areas from New Year's Eve to the first day of the lunar year, with temperatures reaching their lowest points on the first day. However, the weather will stabilize on the second and third days of the lunar year, as conditions grow sunnier in the west and cloudier in the east, and temperatures gradually warming.
