KEELUNG (TVBS News) — Keelung City Mayor George Hsieh, announced Monday (Jan. 29) a collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley, to open a remote course for the city's high school students.
Of 249 applicants, 30 will be selected for the program, which begins next month.
This initiative is part of Hsieh's strategy to encourage academic excellence locally. He plans to launch many more courses in 2024 to expose Keelung's top high schoolers to high-quality international education.
Hsieh visited the computer lab at Berkeley's College of Computing, Data Science, and Society in September last year, which offered programs aimed at attracting top-tier U.S. and international high school students.
The students chosen for the collaboration will undertake a course to expand their knowledge of the autonomous vehicle industry, mainly through programming in Python and learning various algorithms.
Classes will be held twice weekly from Feb. 24 to March 24 in the city hall briefing room. Upon completion of 10 days of video lessons, students will be awarded a certificate of completion from UC Berkeley.
The city of Keelung often sees its excellent students go to Taipei for further studies. Hence, special international courses in partnership with universities like Berkeley were introduced to encourage education locally among high school students.
The students conveyed excitement at the prospect of adding a UC Berkeley certificate to their college applications and are grateful to the city for providing this opportunity.
