TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's government has confirmed a budget surplus, with priorities including debt repayment and strengthening infrastructure investments, Cabinet spokesman Lin Tze-luen announced Thursday (Jan. 25).

Lin expressed gratitude toward society and the government for their joint efforts, which led to significant economic growth.

In the fiscal year 2023, Taiwan's annual tax revenue again exceeded its target, reaching NT$367.1 billion, marking Taiwan's third-highest record in history.

Speculation surrounds whether the government will again issue a cash rebate due to the 2023 surplus, as the extra tax revenue of nearly NT$500 billion in 2022 led to the government distributing NT$6,000 to citizens and eligible foreign nationals.

Addressing these speculations, Lin  said the government would consider popular opinion while deliberating on budget surplus utilization.

Lin said the application of the tax surplus in 2023 will adhere to fiscal discipline, describing the government's primary objectives as debt repayment and bolstering infrastructure investments.

He added that steady efforts will be made to adequately meet national and individual needs, using related financial resources to advance national affairs, allowing Taiwan to develop sustainably.
