TAINAN (TVBS News) — Amid freezing temperatures, Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che authorized schools Tuesday (Jan. 23) to determine their own holiday schedules based on student count and weather.

Huang noted that all junior high and elementary schools within the city have started their winter vacation. However, students attending tutoring and after-school programs must continue classes unless the schools themselves make decisions for days off.

Speaking to the ongoing efforts to help the city's homeless population, the Tainan City Government continues to strengthen its care for those without a fixed abode by providing them with warm clothing and hot meals.

The local government has also made an appeal to the homeless to seek shelter in available accommodations, promising adequate bed spaces.

Huang reported a total of 219 homeless people registered in Tainan City. Of these, 130 dwell on the streets, while the rest have been placed in local facilities.

Rehabilitation centers for homeless individuals have been established in both the South District and the Xinying District in Tainan to provide necessary support and help them rebuild their lives.
