Lai urges lawmakers to bridge government, people (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Recently elected Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President Lai Ching-te met with newly inaugurated legislators on Tuesday (Jan. 23) to share his experiences and expectations as a former legislator.
To illustrate the hard work needed, he emphasized that he used to go straight back to the dormitories after work, foregoing any social activities.
Lai, who is assuming the post of party chairman, attended the "New Legislator Consensus Camp" held at the Legislative Yuan on the same day. The new parliamentary session will start from Feb. 1.
During the meeting, Lai stressed that the new legislators are a fresh force in the nation. He urged them to act as a bridge between the government and the people, collaborating with their party to advance the national development goals.
The DPP leader gave three pieces of advice to first-time lawmakers, dismissing the term "greenhorns" as he believes it is not the way forward.
He encouraged them to become a new force for the nation, stay true to their original intentions, engage in professional questioning, and implement their ideals.
Finally, Lai specifically highlighted the teamwork aspect of legislative work. Driving national development is not a solo act but requires the combined efforts of all new lawmakers in cooperation with their party, Lai said.
He also drew from personal experience as a newly-elected legislator, emphasizing the importance of learning from others' experiences and the necessity for self-learning and improving professional expertise.
