Taiwan‘s CEC battles misinformation on TikTok (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Election Commission (CEC) reported Monday (Jan. 22) that it had filed 105 complaints with TikTok regarding false or misleading election-related content. Of those, 10 were made before the election and 95 following it. As of 10 a.m. Monday, 54 of the posts had been taken down, and the cases are still ongoing.
A substantial amount of inaccurate or untruthful audio-visual information related to the election has been circulating on TikTok.
CEC Vice Chairman Chen Chao-chien explained that the Presidential and Vice Presidential Election and Recall Act, as well as the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, grant candidates the right to request the removal of deepfake videos once identified.
Online social platforms also see the importance of preventing false or misleading election-related content. For the sake of fair elections and under their community principles, they have established contact channels with the CEC.
As for details related to specific online platforms, the CEC declined to comment or respond on a case-by-case basis.
