TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Kaohsiung mayor Han Kuo-yu, announced via Facebook on Thursday (Jan. 18) that he and fellow Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Johnny Chiang will jointly vie for the position of President and Vice President of the Legislative Yuan.
In the 2024 election, the KMT marked its triumphant return to the legislature, becoming the largest party after eight years.
Han Kuo-yu, who was at the top of the legislator-at-large list, received considerable attention as a potential presidential nominee within the legislature.
Han stated that he and Chiang are committed to revitalizing the Legislative body's responsibility of supervising and balancing, and to abandoning the model followed by the legislative branch during the past eight years.
He emphasized the necessity of consistent legislative advocacy, reviewing of bills, policy supervision, and budget scrutiny in the successful realization of a democratic society.
Han thanked Chiang for agreeing to run and cooperate in an electoral partnership they've dubbed "Han-Chiang" and for restoring the oversight and balance of power roles in the legislature.
In a move to fulfill promises made to over 8 million voters and achieve unity within the opposition in the legislature, Chiang has consented to this collaboration.
However, he expressed hopes to prioritize the vice-president candidacy for a nominee put forth by the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) if they should do so.
Han reiterated his commitment to labor tirelessly for the welfare and benefits of the Taiwanese people, irrespective of the outcome.
