TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) announced Wednesday (Jan. 17) that a cold wave is set to hit Taiwan next week bringing widespread and enduring frigid weather across the island.

According to CWA forecaster Liu Pei-teng, northern Taiwan will experience temperatures ranging between 7 to 9 degrees Celsius, central regions between 8 to 10 degrees, and the south between 10 to 13 degrees. He further predicted snowfall in mountainous areas 1000 to 1500 meters above sea level in the northern region next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Regarding this week's weather, the northeastern monsoon will gradually weaken from Wednesday, with temperatures set to rise till Friday. Winds will be mainly easterly and temperatures during the day will range from 22 to 27 degrees, with lows between 13 to 18 degrees.

Local, brief showers may occur in the eastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula, while western regions will remain sunny. Distinctive diurnal temperature fluctuations are expected.

A weather front is forecast to approach Taiwan on Friday night, resulting in unstable weather and likely rain in areas north and central and the eastern half on Saturday. Scattered rain is also possible in the south.

Following the arrival of the cold wave, from Sunday to Wednesday next week, the northern and eastern parts of Taiwan should expect significant rainfall due to the humidity carried by the cold current. Localized rain might also occur in the mountainous regions of central and southern Taiwan.

As the cold wave arrives next week, the public is advised to take necessary precautions to keep warm.
