Taiwan‘s election frenzy: Final weekend rallies in Kaohsiung (TVBS News)

KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — The final weekend of the 2024 election race saw all three presidential candidates from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Taiwan People's Party (TPP), and the Kuomintang (KMT) rallying in Kaohsiung.

The DPP’s presidential candidate, Lai Ching-te, and his running mate, Hsiao Bi-khim, will focus on the Fengshan District for their 'Golden Week Eve' rally. Dignitaries present will include President Tsai Ing-wen, former Premier Su Tseng-chang, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, and local legislative candidates.

Coincidentally, the KMT and TPP both chose the popular Ruifeng Night Market for their night rallies. KMT's candidate Hou Yu-ih and TPP's Ko Wen-je are expected to stagger their appearances by an hour to draw voters.

On Sunday afternoon, the KMT hosted a unity victory rally called 'Taiwan Safe, People Healthy' at Dream Mall. Attendees included former President Ma Ying-jeou, KMT Chairman Eric Chu, former Kaohsiung Mayor and KMT legislator-at-large candidate Han Kuo-yu, and former National Taiwan University President Kuan Chun-ming.

TPP candidate Ko Wen-je and his wife, Peggy Chen, made afternoon appearances in Kaohsiung, hitting the streets to boost support and later drawing attention with a rally at Aozidi Forest Park.

For the rallies at Ruifeng Night Market, with Ko arriving first and Hou one hour later, crowd control and traffic will become a focus. The organizers reminded attendees to stay safe, and police said manpower would be deployed as necessary per the traffic status.

With a jam-packed schedule, the candidates are all leaving no stone unturned as the race intensifies in the final week of campaigning.
