TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The recent murder of a junior high student in New Taipei has reignited societal debate over the death penalty. Despite repeated questioning by Hou Yu-i, Lai Ching-te has remained notably silent on the issue as of Friday (Jan. 5).

During his campaign in Pingtung, Lai criticized what he perceives as the weak constitution of certain political parties, implicitly referencing Hou. He also accused his hometown, Wanli in New Taipei, of engaging in petty political maneuvers. Despite these assertions, Lai skipped the topic of the death penalty.

Lai has consistently evaded Hou's daily inquiries about his stance on abolishing capital punishment. He has swiftly ended any conversations on the subject, especially as the election enters its final stages.

While Lai has been aggressive in attacking his political rivals, he has strategically chosen to remain silent on the divisive issue of the death penalty abolition, shaping his campaign narrative while evading this controversial topic.
