NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Presidential candidates from the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) staged simultaneous campaign rallies in an unplanned bid for voters in New Taipei City on Wednesday (Jan. 3).

Representing the KMT, Hou Yu-ih had a busy schedule in Xindian District, where he distributed flags highlighting his patriotic stance.

During the campaign, Hou criticized DPP's presidential candidate, Lai Ching-te, for allegedly belittling the Republic of China (Taiwan), claiming that such behavior disqualifies Lai as a suitable candidate for the presidency.

Moreover, Hou accused the DPP of corruption and rallied the public to support voting out the current ruling party.

Meanwhile, Lai adopted a "human rights" angle during his visit to the Luchou Lee Family Historic Estate in Luzhou District. He emphasized his respect for human rights, something visible in his commitment to restoring the honor of Lieutenant General Lee, the DPP candidate pointed out.

Lee, a prominent figure in the resistance against Japanese occupation, was falsely accused and executed during the KMT-led era. Lai also promised support in renovating Lee's historical residence.

Lai stressed that his leadership would extend beyond national security to economic development and human rights protection.
