TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A pre-closure poll released on Tuesday (Jan. 2) by the United Daily News indicates that the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) presidential candidate, Lai Ching-te, and vice-presidential candidate, Hsiao Bi-khim, maintain a lead in support compared to their Kuomintang (KMT) rivals, Hou Yu-ih and Jaw Shaw-kong, with a 5-percentage-point advantage.

The Lai-Hsiao ticket garnered 32% of the support, while the Hou-Jaw ticket received 27%, a decrease of four percentage points from polls two weeks ago. The Taiwan People's Party's (TPP) presidential candidate, Ko Wen-je, and vice-presidential candidate, Cynthia Wu, trailed with 21%.

Regarding support rates by age group, the Ko-Wu ticket leads among voters aged 20 to 39 with a 42% support rate. Among 40-59 year-olds, the Hou-Jaw ticket leads the Lai-Hsiao ticket by 1%. Furthermore, among voters over 60, the Hou-Jaw ticket polls at 37%, whereas the Lai-Hsiao ticket polls at 35%.

The survey was conducted from Dec. 26-30, 2023, successfully interviewing 1,215 adults, with 377 refusing to respond. The sampling error is within plus or minus 2.8 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

The poll used a dual telephone register of nationwide residences and mobile phones for random sampling. Improvements to traditional landline sampling were made by supplementing with mobile-only participants.

Survey results are weighted by gender, age, and population structure of individuals over 20 years old in each county and city. Funding for the survey came from United Daily News.
