TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te declared on Saturday (Dec. 30) that Taiwan is aligning with global democratic allies, and the DPP will not follow the old path of the Kuomintang (KMT).

Lai's statement came during the sole 2024 presidential candidate debate on television when questioned about Taiwan's ability to remain neutral amid U.S.-China competition.

In response, Lai emphasized that President Tsai's diplomatic strategy has gained global acclaim. As the most experienced candidate among the three groups, Lai asserted that he has played a crucial role in garnering international support for Taiwan. He highlighted his commitment to continuing in the same vein, relying on past experiences, and aligning with the foundation laid by former U.S. Representative Hsiao Bi-khim.

Meanwhile, KMT's presidential candidate, Hou Yu-ih, criticized Lai for not assisting New Taipei City during the pandemic. In response to the accusation, Lai pointed to Hou's epidemic prevention efforts and emphasized that, from the central government, he oversaw operations while everyone managed their respective duties. Lai stated, "Just because I'm not on the front lines doesn't mean I'm not contributing."

Lai further argued that Taiwan People's Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je is full of political slogans without real achievements. He emphasized that President Tsai's performance has surpassed that of former President Ma Ying-jeou.
