SEOUL (TVBS News) — Acclaimed South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun was found dead in a suspected suicide in his car on Wednesday (Dec. 27). Laudated for his roles in numerous popular films and television dramas, Lee had garnered extensive popularity across Asia, including Taiwan.
Among Lee's most notable works are the television dramas 'Coffee Prince' and 'My Mister,' and the Oscar-winning film 'Parasite.'
Lee had previously visited Taiwan in January 2019, along with fellow South Korean actor Ha Jung-woo, to promote their film 'Take Point.' The pair held three meet-and-greet sessions in Taipei theatres and also staged promotional activities in Taichung. Their journey on Taiwan High-Speed Rail drew crowds of Taiwanese fans, sparking a local trend of 'chasing high-speed trains.'
In 2018, Lee's performance in 'My Mister,' starring with popular South Korean singer-songwriter, composer, and actress IU, had won rave reviews.
In 2019, he played a wealthy father in 'Parasite,' which clinched both the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The peak of Lee's artistic career was clouded by suspicion of drug involvement, leading him to choose suicide—a tragic end that has deeply saddened his fans worldwide.
