TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te emphasized on Tuesday (Dec. 26) that President Tsai Ing-wen will not renege on her promise to deliver 200,000 units of social housing.

During the second televised policy statement forum, Lai highlighted his plans for the future: 130,000 housing units will be newly constructed, and another 170,000 will fall under lease management, summing to an estimated total of 300,000.

Lai clarified that President Tsai pledged to promote 200,000 social housing units during her eight-year term. Before stepping down in 2024, contracts for more than 120,000 units have been put in place, and over 80,000 will be for rent under management, thus emphasizing the President's commitment to housing goals.

Lai elaborated on his plans for the residential developments in New Taipei's Wen Tzu Tsun (塭仔圳), which covers an area of 400 hectares.

By using only 5% of this land to build social housing, nearly 10,000 additional units will be provided, far exceeding the 2,100 households planned by Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih, he stated.

Lai concluded that necessary land for these developments could be provided by the central government, or local governments could offer 3% of the land for non-municipal cities and 5% for municipal cities in zoning requisitions or city re-planning to create social housing.
