Taiwan can learn from Israel's military training: Hsiao (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim lauded Israel's innovative military service training and suggested that Taiwan could learn from the Middle Eastern nation's use of dual-use technology — a blend of military and civilian applications during a discussion on Monday (Dec. 25).

When asked if Taiwan could become the "Israel of Asia," Hsiao noted key differences between the two countries by pointing out distinctions in military obligation stipulations and defense budgets.

According to Hsiao, Taiwanese society is not ready to embrace a system where all men and women are required to serve in the military.

"The history and surrounding environment of Taiwan are drastically different from Israel's; we need to find our own path," she stated, underlining the necessity for Taiwan to learn from different countries while maintaining its unique historical and geopolitical context.

Regarding Taiwan's current four-month military service training period, Hsiao admitted the need for it to be extended to a year – a viewpoint shared by many nations. She believes that increased military prowess is key to safeguarding peace.

Hsiao then proposed that Taiwan could reference other countries in employing advanced dual-use technology. This would provide servicemen with valuable skills and ensure that their contributions to national defense are seen as a meaningful part of their life experiences.
