TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's bustling urban areas mask a silent, often ignored crisis — homelessness. This stark reality defies stereotypes and demands widespread awareness and action.
According to 2022 data from the Executive Yuan, Taiwan has 3,002 homeless people, mainly in cities, with Taipei being the core of this issue.
Contrary to common belief, only 7% of Taiwan's homeless engage in begging. Most are employed in unstable jobs like construction and cleaning, earning an average of NT$5,000 monthly, barely enough to survive.
Annie Lee, secretary-general of the Homeless Taiwan Association (芒草心), highlights their struggle. Even those who can afford the lowest rent face rejection from landlords due to their job instability.
Over 80% of Taiwan's homeless are over 45, facing ageism in the job market. For homeless women, the situation is worse, often compounded by mental health issues and fear.
Homelessness in Taiwan stems from various causes, including health and financial crises. The street community offers a sense of belonging for some.
Organizations like Homeless Taiwan and Do You a Flavor (人生百味) provide crucial support, offering shelter, food, and emotional support, particularly during the harsh winters and isolating holiday seasons.
The growing number of homeless, especially among the elderly, highlights the need for mental health support in this group.
Homelessness in Taiwan calls for a societal paradigm shift. Often unseen and stigmatized, these individuals need empathy and concerted efforts for a more inclusive, compassionate society.
