TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In anticipation of the New Year's holiday rush, the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) announced Tuesday (Dec. 19) the addition of extra trains from Dec. 29 to Jan. 1, 2024. The decision to increase the number of trains comes as the TRA expects a surge in travel during the festive period.

Starting from midnight on Dec. 21, travelers can book additional train services through the TRA website, its e-booking app (e訂通), convenience stores, and telephone reservation systems. This move is aimed at facilitating convenient travel arrangements for those planning to celebrate the New Year across the island.

A total of 18 extra train services will be deployed over the holiday period, with six additional services on the Eastern Line. These include one northbound and one southbound train operating on the cross-island route from Taitung through Kaohsiung to Taipei, and vice versa.

Meanwhile, the South-Link Line will see an increase of four Puyuma Express and Tze-Chiang Limited Express trains, while six more EMU900 commuter express trains will be added to the Western Line.

To cater to the expected crowd for New Year’s Eve celebrations, an additional 24 overnight train services will be added across the northern, central, southern, and eastern regions, aimed at ensuring smooth transportation for event-goers dispersing from various festivities.

Travelers can check timings and schedule details for these extra trains on the official TRA website as well as the e-booking app, allowing them to plan their journeys during one of the busiest times of the year.
