Cold snap in Taiwan tied to surge in cardiac arrests (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold snap from Dec. 15 to 17 has coincided with an uptick in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) across Taiwan, with 165 cases of cardiac events reported during this period, according to statistics.

The National Fire Agency explained on Monday (Dec. 18) that not all incidents were directly linked to the colder temperatures.

In the Taipei and New Taipei metropolitan areas, 18 incidents of OHCA due to internal medical conditions were reported between the morning of Dec. 16 and the morning of Dec. 17. Tragically, 13 of these cases resulted in deaths, while 5 individuals were successfully resuscitated, the fire agency stated.

The New Taipei City Fire Department has issued a warning in light of the recent temperature drop, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, urging those with histories of chronic illnesses, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes, to take extra care by staying warm and getting regular health checkups.

These precautions are especially critical given the forecast of an intense continental cold air mass expected to sweep across the area on Tuesday.

The fire department also reminds the public to be vigilant for symptoms such as chest pain, tightness, and breathing difficulties. Individuals are advised to dial 119 immediately for emergency assistance.
