TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT) vice-presidential candidate Jaw Shaw-kong vowed on Thursday (Dec. 14) to step down as chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation of China (BCC) if Vice President Lai Ching-te resolves the alleged property issues in Wanli District owned by Jaw's family.

During a live stream with Taiwanese internet celebrity Holger Chen, Jaw criticized Lai for not addressing his Wanli District property allegations. Jaw argued, "If Lai Ching-te's unauthorized construction in Wanli is wrong, and he does not demolish the illegal structure, then why should I, who legally comply, resign?"

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has criticized Jaw for not resigning from his BCC position after becoming the KMT's vice-presidential nominee.

During the same broadcast, Jaw expressed support for reducing the voting age to 18, a stance he had previously advocated during a speech at National Chengchi University the day before. The DPP has questioned Jaw's consistency, highlighting his differing attitude last year.

Furthermore, Jaw clarified his stance on Taiwan's sovereignty, stating that he has never endorsed unification with mainland China but opposes Taiwanese independence due to the potential risk of conflict. "Moreover, it's not just me; even [U.S. President Joe] Biden doesn't support [Taiwanese independence], and Lai Ching-te himself said he's not for it," Jaw emphasized.
