TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan expressed optimism on Tuesday (Dec. 12) about the progress of trade talks with the United States, highlighting U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai's positive stance on Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with key partners.

Cheng's comments coincide with significant strides in economic and trade negotiations between Taiwan and the United States. The discussions have expanded, with the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade already achieving five agreements.

Minister Without Portfolio John Deng, Taiwan's representative in the trade talks, confirmed ongoing second-phase negotiations, including discussions on agriculture. Cheng did not rule out the possibility of addressing tariffs during the negotiations.

Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives has taken steps to ease taxation burdens by advancing a proposal for mutual tax exemption to committee review. Progress in this proposal could prevent double taxation for corporations and individuals.

Cheng remains hopeful about the ongoing development of trade relations between Taiwan and the United States, emphasizing the need for continued effort in deepening economic ties.
