NTU students vote on ‘108 Curriculum,‘ clash over classics (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Students at National Taiwan University (NTU) used the Dcard social media platform to express their opinions on Taiwan's Ministry of Education's recent "108 Curriculum," which has generated heated debate, particularly regarding the removal of classical Chinese literature.
Chu Kuei-chih, a teacher at Taipei First Girls High School (TFG), criticized the curriculum reform for significantly reducing classical Chinese works. In the student-led poll, 38% of participants supported Chu's view, emphasizing the importance of classical literature in Mandarin education.
Conversely, 24% of students opposed the significance of classical texts, considering them "pedantic Confucian brainwashing." Additionally, 39% abstained from taking a strong stance, humorously identifying themselves as "engineering majors too busy with homework to have an opinion."
The student poll results reveal a complex issue with conflicting student comments, highlighting the debate's depth and diversity.
