Cities end school liquid egg ban, set strict standards (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Following a heated controversy over the use of imported eggs that led to a ban on liquid eggs in school lunches, multiple municipalities in Taiwan, including Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, and Taichung, announced the lifting of the ban starting from Dec. 11.
The lifting of the ban comes with specific conditions: only liquid eggs produced in December and those that carry the Certified Agricultural Standards (CAS) mark can be used.
CAS-certified liquid eggs are priced at roughly NT＄125 per kilogram, which is 1.5 times more expensive than regular shell eggs but ensures higher quality.
Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen cited the "egg shortage crisis" resolution and the strengthened regulation on liquid egg production as reasons to lift the ban.
School meal providers pointed out that the previous ban led to the removal of various egg dishes from the students' menus. Now, they can gradually reintroduce these dishes.
In a Facebook post, former Agriculture Minister Chen Chi-chung expressed his view on the ban lift, lamenting the initial decision by local governments to ban domestic liquid eggs should not have happened, underscoring the importance of food safety in his message.
