Taiwan pledges $2M to Pacific fisheries foundation (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Thursday (Dec. 7) that it will continue its support for the Western & Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) by pledging an additional US$2 million over the next five years to a foundation established by the inter-governmental fishery body.
At a press conference, Li Kuan-te, deputy director-general of MOFA's Department of International Organizations, revealed that the donation is aimed at bolstering the fisheries capabilities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including Taiwan's Pacific allies.
Since 2017, MOFA has already contributed US$2 million for the establishment of the foundation, in a bid to ensure sustainable fishery practices and promote economic development in these communities, Li stated.
The Western & Central Pacific Fisheries Commission is currently holding its annual session from Dec. 4 through Dec. 8 in the Cook Islands.
