Taiwan eyes future in nuclear tech, open to reactors (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, Wang Mei-hua, announced Wednesday (Dec. 6) that the nation will keep a close watch on the development of new nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors and fusion power, remaining open to their adoption.
During the conversation, Premier Chen Chien-jen noted that if the challenges surrounding nuclear waste from fusion technology can be addressed, it is expected that societal support for the technology would increase significantly.
This declaration comes as over 20 countries, including the United States and Japan, proposed during the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), to triple the global nuclear power capacity by 2050 from the level it was in 2020.
At the same conference, nearly 120 countries committed to tripling the volume of renewable energy generation internationally within the next seven years. This ambitious goal has been established as a consensus among major nations.
Moreover, at COP28, 22 countries advocated for nuclear energy.
The focus of their discussions included the potential for small modular reactors and nuclear fusion technology, as well as the avenues for securing international financial support to develop these technologies.
These positive strides in energy dialogues at COP28 signal a growing interest in diverse and innovative approaches to combatting climate change while powering the future.
