KMT VP candidate pledges support to Hou (Courtesy of Hou Yu-ih‘s campaign office)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a live stream on Wednesday (Nov. 29), Kuomintang (KMT) vice-presidential candidate Jaw Shaw-kong stated that the vice presidency serves as a backup to the head of state, asserting his close relationship with KMT presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih, while promising to let Hou take the lead in joint interviews.
Jaw contrasted this cooperative dynamic with a hypothetical pairing of Hou with Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je, questioning "How would Hou get along then?"
Jaw also countered the Democratic Progressive Party's claims that Hou would become a puppet if elected, emphasizing the critical importance of victory in the upcoming election. He expressed concerns that continued rule by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) could lead Taiwan into a severe crisis, including becoming a battlefield and losing everything.
Highlighting the courage and inclusiveness shown by Hou in inviting him to run as a team, Jaw praised Hou's track record of team collaboration reminiscent of former President Ma Ying-jeou's tenure, where extensive policy discussions were the norm.
Jaw stated that while the vice president is a backup role and he is open to not being consulted on decisions, he hopes that Hou would be receptive to good advice. He stressed that while the vice-presidential campaign should be as rigorous as the presidential one, once elected, adherence to the constitution and laws is paramount.
As a newcomer to the race, Jaw recognized his ability to stir conversation, acknowledged the need to respect Hou, and observed that a partnership with Ko would have a distinct impact on Hou's candidacy.
