Tight race in Taiwan: poll shows DPP slightly ahead of KMT (Courtesy of Gallup)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In an increasingly tight race for Taiwan's 2024 presidential election, the latest poll results released Tuesday (Nov. 28) by Gallup show the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) "Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-khim ticket" narrowly leading with 31.01% support.
The Kuomintang (KMT), with its "Hou Yu-ih and Jaw Shaw-kong pair," trails just behind at 30.94%, less than a tenth of a percentage point difference from the DPP.
The Taiwan People's Party's (TPP) "Ko Wen-je and Wu Hsin-ying combo" garners 18.12% of the electorate's approval. Meanwhile, 4.74% of voters indicated they would abstain from voting, 12.27% remained undecided, and 2.93% did not know or refused to answer.
Regarding party identification, the DPP has 22.86% allegiance, the KMT slightly higher at 25.76%, the TPP at 11.93%, and the New Power Party (NPP) at a modest 0.75%.
Interestingly, an indicative 31.7% of respondents express a preference for candidates over party lines, suggesting that nearly one-third of the electorate are swing voters, which could play a decisive role in the upcoming election.
The poll, conducted from Nov. 25 to Nov. 27, surveyed residents over 20 across all 22 municipalities of Taiwan. It involved a stratified random sample of 1,073 individuals. The successful interview rate was reported at 56.77%.
Gallup's results were obtained after weighting by gender, age, and household registration location, with the sampling error at plus or minus 2.99% at a 95% confidence level.
