Hsiao Bi-khim vows to focus on serving the nation (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party's vice-presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim expressed her concern about the dark "vortex" of Taiwanese politics on Thursday (Nov. 23), but remains focused on serving the nation without distraction from unrelated issues.
At a media session with domestic and international journalists, Hsiao faced questions about her tenure stationed in the United States.
She acknowledged her role in promoting the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade and thanked her colleagues at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States for their efforts.
Hsiao revealed that negotiations on the trade initiative and the "Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement" are still in progress, but added there is bipartisan support in both the U.S. Congress, Senate, and House of Representatives, with leaders proposing legislative drafts for the same.
She shared that during her time in the U.S., she tackled unanticipated issues, including supply chain resilience and securing vaccines.
Hsiao highlighted the challenges stemming from Taiwan's unique international status, leading to unfair treatment of Taiwanese in the global arena.
The vice-presidential candidate sees the resilience that Taiwanese people developed from these setbacks as a strength, learning to pragmatically seek paths to their goals.
Hsiao views her life experiences as nourishment for growth, believing that her past has fortified her to face challenges with greater strength.
