TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Lai Ching-te, alongside running mate Hsiao Bi-khim, top U.S. envoy, registered with the Central Election Commission (CEC) for the 2024 presidential election, becoming the first confirmed party duo in the race. This registration occurred on the same day as Lai's interview with Time magazine, where he articulated his political stance.

The Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) of China's Central Committee promptly criticized the DPP's presidential and vice-presidential candidates, labeling them as proponents of "independence upon independence." In the Time interview, Lai dismissed these accusations, arguing that Chinese officials, having not experienced a transition to democracy, couldn't grasp the significance of their criticism. He suggested that China's swift reaction to the DPP's registration underscored its intentions to interfere in Taiwan's election process.

Lai highlighted the contrasting visions for Taiwan's future held by the DPP and the opposition Kuomintang (KMT), with the DPP firmly committed to defending Taiwan's sovereignty against Chinese pressures. "The DPP is firm in the protection of Taiwan's independence and freedom, and will not recognize China's illusory attempt at unification," Lai declared.

During the eventful registration day, Lai and Hsai, who identify as a dog person and a cat person respectively, wore badges featuring painted animal figures, symbolizing a unique collaboration between two distinct personalities.

The historic occasion saw DPP supporters flooding into the building, expressing their enthusiasm and backing for the duo's impending election campaign, as excitement reached its peak.
