TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih on Monday (Nov. 20) expressed commitment to respecting Taiwan People's Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je's decision, following the failure of the two opposition parties to agree on a joint presidential ticket last Saturday.

"No matter what the final outcome, we will respect Ko's decision. We will stand united and stay the course to eventually win the election," Hou stated to reporters at a temple event in Chiayi County.

This comment followed Ko's statement at a campaign rally on Sunday, where he said, "I will extend my utmost goodwill and unite all forces that can be united. But I will continue fighting to the end as the TPP's presidential candidate."

As registration for the 2024 presidential and legislative elections opened on Nov. 20 and will continue until Nov. 24, KMT Chairman Eric Chu expressed hope on Sunday for a finalized alliance decision by Wednesday.

The KMT and TPP had initially planned to announce their presidential and vice-presidential candidates last Saturday; however, disagreements over opinion poll margin of error calculations prevented a consensus.
