NSB watching Chinese spouses closely as election nears (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Chief of Taiwan's National Security Bureau, Tsai Ming-yen, has warned the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that any mainland Chinese spouses who accept funding from the CCP will be handed over to judicial authorities.
Tsai has promised to respect the activities of mainland Chinese spouses in Taiwan as long as they are legal. However, he has urged vigilance on actions that signify collaboration with united front work operations, political objectives, or accept funding from CCP and developing organizations in Taiwan.
Tsai made these comments in response to the decision of Taiwan People's Party (TPP) to include mainland China-born Xu Chunying in its at-large legislative candidate list, which has raised national security concerns among the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Xu has claimed that she no longer carries any Chinese status and, therefore, has no obligation to observe its laws. However, Tsai has not publicly commented on Xu's background.
Regarding the extramarital affair partner of DPP legislator Chao Tien-lin, who is accused of being a spy, Tsai said that the case has entered the courts for examination and that he respects the outcome of the investigation. Therefore, he will refrain from commenting further as the issue has entered judicial proceedings.
