TSMC abandons fab plans in Taoyuan due to local opposition (TVBS News)

TAOYUAN (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has abandoned plans to establish a new chip factory in Taoyuan's Longtan District on Tuesday (Oct. 17) due to strong opposition from local residents.

Initially, TSMC intended to produce chips smaller than 2 nanometers at the site, but poor public reaction led to the announcement of abandoning the project.

The government's expropriation of a land area of about 160 hectares, 90% of which is private property, triggered public dissatisfaction.

In addition to fearing that their homes may be demolished, the locals also opposed the government's failure to communicate with them prior to the expropriation.

The city's original planning had plans to develop the area into a tech park in conjunction with Hsinchu Science Park.

Based on the original plans, TSMC would have potentially secured job opportunities for nearly 5,900 individuals with the introduction of company's new fab.

Despite TSMC's withdrawal from the plan, residents are still concerned that the government will continue to promote other related developments.

Taoyuan City acknowledged the difficulties in land acquisition but did not specify the future plans.
