HSINCHU (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) Founder Morris Chang took to the stage on Saturday (Oct. 14) to warn of increased competition in the semiconductor industry in the upcoming years.

Speaking at the company's "Sports Day," which resumed after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chang emphasized that TSMC remains a "battleground for the world's geopolitical strategists."

"The competitive environment for TSMC in the years to come will not become any easier," the 92-year-old founder said.

He added, "Globalization, at least within the semiconductor industry, is already gone."

The last time TSMC held its Sports Day was in 2019. Back then, Chang had stated that TSMC would become a strategic geopolitical battleground where the company's relevance would significantly increase.

Chang's prediction stands today, as TSMC's contribution to the global semiconductor industry and world economy has surpassed previous years.

Despite the looming challenges, Chairman Mark Liu also took the opportunity to declare that each entry-level employee would receive a bonus averaging NT$16,000, totaling at least NT$800 million.

TSMC also presented each employee in Taiwan with a "benefit coupon" with a face value of NT$2,000.

In his speech, Liu motivated his staff to adopt an attitude in life where they are not arrogant in victory nor lose heart in defeat as the company expands overseas and steps out of its comfort zone.
