TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of National Defense (MND) released test videos of Taiwan-made ballistic plates in military bulletproof vests on Tuesday (July 11), highlighting their defensive capabilities. The ministry confirmed that the plates meet the National Institute of Justice requirements under the U.S. government.
The press conference came in response to a video of New Taipei City Councilor Lin Ping-yu and YouTuber GunFunSam released on Friday (July 7) showing the plate's vulnerability to gunfire.
Asked whether the plates could withstand the People's Liberation Army's bullets, the ministry admitted that they could not obtain the Chinese military's weapons for experiments. But regarding functional calculations, the plates are all within the scope of protection, the ministry said.
According to Yu Yu-tang, director of the Acquisition Management Division of the Armaments Bureau under the MND, "Taiwan-made level III ballistic plates underwent verification by authoritative international laboratories, as well as our own, which is the Standard Testing Center (規格鑑測中心)."
"Their quality and safety prove to have no issues," he added. However, how the councilor obtained the ballistic plate remains in question.
The ministry has launched an investigation. If it is confirmed to be a controlled military item, said Wu I-sheng, director of the Human Rights Protection Division of the Department of Legal Affairs under the MND, the ministry will examine the legal responsibility of relevant personnel in accordance with regulations.
